Making the Zak Desktop

When you first log on to a new machine as Zak, you'll get a fairly minimal desktop. To make life easier, you need to put some shortcuts on to it. Once you've done this a couple of times, it will be really easy. Until then, let's give you the steps:

  1. Open My Computer
  2. Open the share called O: (NetApps on NTServer)
  3. Open the folder called Policy
  4. You will see several folders. One will be called Pupils, and one Staff. (If you have systems running Windows98/ME and Windows XP, there will also be one called XP. Inside that there will be Pupils and Staff folders too.)
  5. Inside the Pupils and Staff folders, there are other folders called Desktop and Start Menu
  6. To get a shortcut onto the desktop, right-click on the folder to which you want to connect and drag to the desktop
  7. Let go of the mouse button
  8. Choose Make shortcut here from the menu that appears
  9. Now right-click on the new shortcut, and give it a sensible name. Pupil Start Menu and Pupil Desktop are good examples

And that's it, really. You can tailor the system by right-dragging to the desktop. Everything will be all over the place when you've finished. To tidy up, right click on the desktop. Choose Arrange icons from the menu, and select By name from the submenu.
