A brief glossary of terms


Term Meaning
Server Computer that runs in the background somewhere and controls stuff.
Server Software Programs that run on the Server.
Workstation Computers that people use in class or in the suite. Ordinary computers on the network.
Network Wires running around the school that computers use to send and receive information.
Network Point Socket in classroom or suite that computer plugs in to to connect to the network. Looks a bit like a telephone socket, but not quite.
Internet Point What some people have been told Network Points are called. They aren't.
Wireless LAN Extends the network beyond the Network Point.
Patch lead Cable that connects computer to Network Point
Log On Screen What you see when you turn on a Workstation.
User Name Name with which you log on
Password Set of characters that help keep your log on secure.
Domain Usually, the school name. Set by the system. Don't touch.
Logon script Sets the machine up when you log on. Makes sure the user gets the right resources and is kept away from others.
Desktop What is displayed on the screen when you log on.
Paranoid What you need to be about security. Always log off, never leave computers logged on, never let pupils on to a computer when it is logged on.
