Adding Programs: Stage 1
Installing the program
- Log on as Zak
- Put the program's CDROM or floppy into the computer.
If it's a CDROM (and most are, these days), it will start
off all by itself and present you with a screen inviting
you to install it. Click on OK, Install, or whatever is
suggested.
- The installer will start, and will probably offer
several options. These are to do with where it puts stuff
on the computer. Check these. Most need to be unchanged.
If you're asked where saved files should go, either type
W:\ or Browse to Zak's home folder. Resources
(like clipart and example files) need be put in
R:\. Most importantly on XP systems, make sure
the program is installed for All users.
- When the installation has finished, the installer
might want to restart your computer. If it does, let it.
When it has restarted, log on as Zak again and check it
works. If it does, log off.
- That's the program installed. In a standard system,
you need to do that on every workstation. This takes
longer than installing onto the server, which you can do
with quite a few programs. However, you will get much
better performance from the system if programs are
installed on local computers.
The next procedure is to add
the program to the Pupil and/or Staff Start Menus.
